第二次世界大戦後に製作された同じジョン・ウェイン主演の戦争を題材にした映画「太平洋作戦」や「硫黄島の砂」等に比べ、人間ドラマを描くというより戦闘シーンが中心になっている。第二次大戦中の中国戦線を舞台に、米国の戦闘機部隊が日本軍相手に大活躍する物語。空中戦シーンも記録フィルムの使用ではなく、特撮による迫力のあるシーンが随所に挿入されており、戦闘場面の効果をあげている。
